DOUGLAS, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) – The basketball season is upon us, and while some teams tipped off yesterday, some will start their journey today. After a heart breaker in the State quarterfinals last year, the Douglas boys team are using that to fuel this upcoming season.
Head coach Chase Plumb knows how hard his players have been working this off season and said, “We got kids that were hungry all off season, showed up, worked hard from day 1. We got kids that put that behind us and are looking forward to this season. we’ve got a lot of experinence back. 6 seniors, 5 of which were starters last year at some point or another. So, experience is definitely something we have a lot of this year.”
Despite the early exit last year, the Bearcats were dominating teams all year long. They finished with an overall record of 27-2, and one of those wins was against the eventual 4A State Champs.
They are bringing back the majority of their starting line up from last season, and that includes Trey Rinn who came in second in the entire 3A conference in points per game. Their defense was definitely championship caliber, as they only allowed 37 points per game on average.
They lost to Lyman by a single point, and after a season where they dominated all year long, the returning seniors know that this is their last shot at glory.
Senior Nate Halquist said, “We came close our sophomore year two years ago. You know, so kinda the pressure it stacked against us and I think it’s good you know. We gotta come out and perform, we don’t have any other choice we got… Senior year it’s one last shot to win the title so that’s what we’re going for,” while senior Brodie Zwetzig added, “Yeah definitely losing by 1 point sets a… sets a fire under you so you know just kind of use that to fuel the fire so.”
The Bearcats get their season started off in the Burns Winter Classic today.
