England overtakes Germany in race for additional Champions League place
England has overtaken Germany in the race for an additional Champions League place next year, Sportschau confirms.
Due to the new format of UEFA club competitions next season, there are an additional two Champions League spots available. These will be allocated based on each country’s clubs’ performance in Europe.
Prior to the Last 16 ties, Germany occupied 2nd spot, with Italy in 1st ,and England chasing Germany in 3rd.
Due to Bayern losing the lead at Arsenal (drawing 2-2) and Man City drawing away at Real Madrid (3-3), England has drawn level with Germany.
Despite being level, the Premier League is now on course to gain the additional Champions League spot as English clubs have ranked better than their Bundesliga counterparts in previous European campaigns.
This puts England in pole position to gain the extra spot as there are still five Premier League teams left in all three European competitions. In contrast, there are only just three Bundesliga left in Europe – Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Bayer Leverkusen.
Teams such as Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig will be wishing all other German clubs the very best in Europe for the remainder of the season. BVB play Atletico de Madrid on Wednesday in their Champions League Last 16 tie.
