Pool play got off to a rough start for the U.S. on Friday with a 5-2 loss to Sweden. The Americans fell behind early, closed the gap to 3-2 in the third period, then allowed two empty-net goals. Zach Werenski (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Brock Nelson (New York Islanders) scored for the U.S. Joel Farabee, who is from Cicero, New York, had four shots but didn’t record a point.

Things don’t get easier for the U.S. Saturday’s game is against Germany, last year’s IIHF Championship runner-up. The Germans opened this year’s tournament with a win Friday, beating Slovakia, 6-4. The Germans were actually outshot 39-22, including 18-7 in the final period.

The IIHF World Championship began its preliminary round on Friday, May 10, and it continues through Tuesday, May 21. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Thursday, May 23, semifinals on Saturday, May 25, and gold and bronze medal games on Sunday, May 26.
