USAG Benelux crowns own 2023 Best Warriors

CHIEVRES AIR BASE, Belgium – Following two days of grueling tests, two Military Police Soldiers rose above the competition to be crowned U.S. Army Garrison Benelux’s Best Warriors.

Sgt. Christian Reim, from Dülmen Tower Barracks, Germany, was awarded USAG Benelux Best Warrior NCO, while Spc. Joseph Voss, from Chièvres Air Base was awarded USAG Benelux Best Warrior Soldier.

The two competed against nine other Soldiers and NCOs from installations across Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany during the 2023 USAG Benelux Best Warrior Competition at Chièvres Air Base on Feb. 27 and 28.

“I really liked how well the competition was put together,” said Voss, who participated in the competition for the first time this year. “The events were pretty challenging, and it was fun to go against people from [the] other sites.”

The competitors were tested on a variety of military skills during the event, with tasks ranging from an Army Combat Fitness Test, medical proficiency lane and 8-mile ruck march, to a drill and ceremonies test and oral board.

“My hardest [part] would be the ruck,” said Reim. “I’m usually not good at these rucks because it does hurt my feet a lot, but this is also the best I’ve done…so I’m hoping to push that forward [to the next level].”

Reim had previously competed in Best Warrior Competitions at both USAG Benelux and Installation Management Command – Europe (IMCOM-E), he said he gained a lot from this year’s version.

“I think every competition I do, I really learn something about myself I didn’t know before,” he said. “It really takes pushing yourself to the limits to understand what you have and what you’re capable of.”

Both winners said they are excited to compete at the IMCOM–E level Best Warrior Competition in early April.

“It’s a big step, and a lot of train up [for the competition],” said Voss. “I’m nervous…but I think I’m ready to go crush it.”

While only two competitors could earn the title of USAG Benelux Best Warrior, 1st Sgt. Michael Woodard, the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, USAG Benelux First Sergeant, said all the participants felt the event was valuable and thoroughly demanding.

“To see these Soldiers and NCOs possess the grit and motivation to become great was truly amazing,” said Woodard. “I firmly believe that competition breeds success, and…competitions like the Best Warrior develop Soldiers by pushing them both mentally and physically.”
